Boot sector is the first sector containing Master Boot Records (MBR), which is responsible to boot up the operating system from system files. MBR is considered as sensitive information, and if corrupted, it can create problems in loading operating system.

Boot Sector virus is a type of virus that aims for the boot sector and infects MBR files, making it difficult for a user to carry on with the situation. First PC virus, called brain was of the same category. Boot Sector virus is one of the most treacherous virus, as it tries to paralyze the system. This is the reason for taking distinctive measures in taking it down.
Stated below is a detailed procedure, followed by which you can discard this infection.
As the virus subsists in your system files, we recommend not removing it manually.
Create a Bootable Recovery Tool
- Browse, download, and install a reliable security application (e.g. Microsoft Security Essential)
- Set it up as a bootable tool on a removable storage device (e.g. USB drive, CD/DVD Media)
- Update virus definition on bootable tool in the removable drive
Scan you PC
- Now restart your computer and plug in the bootable removable drive
- Keep pressing F8 until you view the Advanced Boot options
- Select USB or CD/DVD Drive (containing antivirus), and boot your system with it.
- On completion of boot sequence, your antivirus will start
- Follow the instructions to conduct a thorough scan of your PC
- Be patient, as it may take a while depending upon the size of your disk
- Remove the detected viruses, and again run a scan for assurance
- Restart your computer in the normal mode
Your hard drive’s boot sector was recently under attacked by a deadly infection. It is quite possible that your system files are already damaged or corrupted, due to which, you may not be able to boot into Windows normally. In such a situation, you are suggested to try for a System Restore, and revive your previous good settings. This will reverse your system to a point when you were not attacked by any virus. This may cause you lose your files, applications, and settings that were involved later than, the restore point was created.
System Restore
- Insert Windows installation disk and restart your computer
- Keep pressing F8 key to boot from CD Drive
- On doing so, you will come across to System Recovery Options
- Go for the option stating System Restore
- From the list of states, choose the point to which you want your system to be restored
- Click Next button and then Finish starting the system restore
If you are still unable to boot into your Windows normally, be advised to opt for a new clean installation of Windows as the virus may have corrupted you operating system.
